Craniosacral Therapy:
Craniosacral Therapy (CST), as defined by the Upledger Institute, is a “gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch, generally no greater than 5 grams or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.”
Infants recovering from or about to undergo tongue tie and lip tie revisions have been shown to benefit from CST.
Tongue-Tie and Lip-Ties Revisions and CST:
Doctors, lactation support teams, and pediatric dentists often refer infants to Dr. Melissa to receive Craniosacral Therapy, occipital adjustments, and jaw (TMJ) adjustments as part of the full, post-operative recovery protocol from tongue/lip/buccal tie revisions. As outlined in the Journal of Oral Health in the March 2015 edition by Dr. Lawrence Kotlow, one of the leading researchers in this field: “appropriate bodywork by a cranial sacral therapist (can) assist in reducing tightness of the surrounding structures of the head and neck areas.”
Receiving Craniosacal Therapy after a tongue-tie or lip-tie revision may decrease the chances of re-adherence of oral tissues, and also decrease the muscular and fascial tightness that limits the child’s ability to breastfeed. Additional research such as that done by Dr. Ghaheri has found it to also decrease infant reflux from air ingestion.
Dr. Melissa is trained in Craniosacral Therapy and combines it during her appointments with pediatric chiropractic.
